NASA Names Headquarters After African American Engineer Mary W. Jackson



NASA on June 24, 2020 announced it will name its headquarters in Washington, D.C. after African American engineer Mary W. Jackson.


Mary W. Jackson, a mathematician and aerospace engineer, worked at NASA from 1951 to 1985. She was the first female African American engineer at NASA. She died in 2005.


Mary W. Jackson is said to have helped NASA succeed in sending American astronauts into space. Also, she is said to contributed immensely in helping African Americans, women, and other minority groups to break barriers and advance in the field of technology and particularly engineering.
