Biographies | Selena Gomez March 28, 2021

Selena Gomez is a music artist, actress, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. She was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, USA, on July 22, 1992. She studied and successfully completed her high school education from home. With a mother who was just 16 years old when she was born, Selena Gomez is said to have often been taken care of by her grandparents, in her early years.

Albeit Selena Gomez’s popularity is often associated with her incredible music, it seems, however, that it was her early interest and success as an actress that propelled her into the mainstream of the entertainment industry.

Selena Gomez’s interest in acting is said to have been inspired by her mother who is a former actress herself. It commenced in 2002 at the tender age of 10 after she secured her debut acting role in a television children series called Barney & Friends. In 2004, after featuring in 13 episodes of the series, Selena Gomez was deemed too old for the children show and compelled to quit.

After quitting Barney & Friends, the pace of Serena Gomez’s acting career became rather slow, characterized by mainly small starring roles including guest starring in some television series and films. That continued for almost three years until 2007 when she secured a lead role in a successful Disney Channel television series called Wizards Of Waverly Place (2007 – 2012). The role as Alex Russo in the Emmy Award winning television series was the ultimate milestone in Selena Gomez’s acting career hence a breakthrough into the global acting stage.

The breakthrough took her acting career to a different level beyond the hitherto mainly television shows to key roles in many movies. It also gave her confidence that led to establishment of her own production firm called July Moon Productions, in 2008.

So far, Selena Gomez has starred in the following movies:

As a music artist, we think Selena Gomez’s interest and desire to pursue music career could have begun after she entered the mainstream of global movie acting in 2017 and probably influenced by the success of songs that she contributed for soundtracks of several television series and animated films that followed. Viewed at in this way, Selena Gomez decision to engage in music career could be seeing as deliberate diversification of her entertainment activities, that capitalized on her preceding success in acting.

Although the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart hence becoming Selena Gomez’s first No. 1 album on the famous US album chart, it was not, however, commercially successful, having reportedly sold just over 390 000 copies in the US as of 2015.

After release of the solo debut studio album in 2013, Selena Gomez fired her long-time managers the same year, probably due to the poor commercial performance of the album. Also, she called it quits with Hollywood Records in 2014 and signed with Interscope Records later that year.

With new management team and record label, Selena Gomez released her solo second studio album Revival in 2015. The consisted of Good For You as its lead single, as well as one of her masterpiece sexy singles Hand To Myself. The album also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

For several years after the release of the solo second studio album, Selena Gomez’s activity at the global music scene slowed down considerably. She, however, collaborated with some other artists in some great duet singles like Wolves in 2017 with Marshmello; Taki Taki in 2018 with DJ Snake, Cardi B & Ozuna; and Anxiety in 2019 with Julia Michael; among others.

In 2020 Selena Gomez released her solo third studio album Rare, probably an indication that she would be fully fledged active in music again. The album consists of Selena Gomez’s masterpiece singles Lose You To Love Me, and Look At Her Now, with the former as the album’s lead single. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart hence becoming Selena Gomez’s third consecutive No. 1 album on the famous US album chart.

First, her life has been incredible inspiration to teenagers and young adults worldwide, through illustrating vividly that teenagers and young people can play considerable role in improving the quality of life in society. That could be directly or indirectly.

On the one hand, directly through delivery of some consumer goods related to the entertainment, fashion, and beauty industries like music and movies for streaming, fashion outfits, beauty accessories like perfumes and makeup, etc. Such consumer goods may contribute significantly to the gross domestic product or income and even happiness in society.

On the other hand, indirectly through influencing delivery of social goods like healthcare, education, clean water, clean air, etc. hence positive change in society’s social, economic, and environmental realms.

Second, some important spiritual, moral, and even social justice lessons could be discerned from Selena Gomez’s life. For instance, inferring from some of the utterances reportedly made by herself, one can believe in God and get close to him without been religious. In our view, that is very true because religions are organizations for worshiping God together, and that one does not have to belong to a religion to believe in God. As such, one can believe in God without belonging to a religion and worship God alone. Also inferring from her utterances, human rights apply equally to all mankind irrespective of race, gender, values, lifestyle, and other aspects of society. The utterances seem to portray some sort of philosophical thinking that could have shaped her life, and especially nature of her philanthropy including activism.
